Daniil Cherny Apostle Pavel. About 1394. 160x109. The icon from the Zvenigorod row (the Intercession Cathedral of Zvenigorod near Moscow). The State Tretyakov Gallery.
The icon was painted by the remarkable Russian icon painter Daniil Cherny. The names both Andrei Rublev and Daniil Cherny were very famous during their lifetime. They worked together in Moscow, Zvenigorod, Vladimir etc. Daniil worked in the same manner as Andrei Rublev, so some of his icons were ascribed either to Andrei Rublev or Theophanes the Greek. But there are some differences in the composition, in depicting of a head, neck. Another colour palette was usually used by the master.
